About Michael.

About Michael.

I focus on how digital platforms can be designed to serve the public interest.

My work centres on a fundamental question: how do we design digital environments that deliver societal outcomes, not just commercial incentives?

As a Co-founder of LyveSocial, I contributed to the early-stage development of a research-led digital concept exploring new models of social interaction, economic participation, and digital wellbeing.

My background is in public health, social research, and institutional leadership, with a long-standing focus on issues of marginalisation, access to services, and social behaviour across diverse contexts.

I have led and contributed to major initiatives across Australia and internationally, securing over $40 million in competitive funding and building cross-sector partnerships spanning government, academia, and community organisations. My work includes founding a rural medical school, establishing a national centre in gerontology, leading a national ageism research and awareness campaign, and developing a multidisciplinary STI centre during the HIV epidemic.

Across my career, the focus has been consistent: how systems shape human wellbeing — from healthcare and social services to digital environments. My current work reflects a shift toward digital platforms as a new frontier, where issues of access, vulnerability, and public interest are increasingly determined by platform design and commercial incentives.

I am particularly interested in collaborations that bridge research, policy, and real-world platform design.

A cross-sectional study of HIV and STIs among male sex workers attending Australian sexual health clinics

Objectives: Although sex work is frequently characterised as a practice with high risk for HIV and other STIs, little is known about the epidemiology of these infections among men who sell sex in Australia. This study reports the prevalence of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, infectious syphilis and HIV among men who have sex with men attending Australian publicly funded sexual health clinics and compares prevalence between sex workers and non-sex workers.

Barriers to sexual health care: A survey of Iranian-American physicians in California, USA

Despite increasing numbers of Iranian-American physicians practicing in the United States, little is known about the barriers that may impact them as providers of sexual health care. This is an important topic as discussions of sexual topics are generally considered a taboo among Iranians. We aimed to identify barriers experienced by Iranian-American physicians that inhibit their willingness to engage in discussions of sexual health care with patients

Male sex workers and their clients

Male sex workers and their clients. This project aims to study male sex workers’ relationships with their clients to evaluate how individual agency mitigates risks and dangers. Developments in biomedical HIV prevention can prevent infections but may also change sexual norms and the sexual marketplace for male sex workers and their clients. These changes align with rising rates of crystal methamphetamine use and online technologies in commercial sex encounters. This project expects to inform policies and practices to protect male sex workers’ health and safety, and provide public health information about HIV prevention and illicit drug use in sex work.
